Reasons why disability claims are denied

Disability claims can be difficult to file, especially if you've never had to file one in the past. If your disability claim is denied, you need to understand the reason why and how you can work to ensure that the next time you file, it is not denied. Let's take a look at the most common reasons why disability claims are denied.

If the Social Security Administration (SSA) investigates your claim and discovers that your disability is due to the continued use of drugs or alcohol, the claim will be denied. Claims for disabilities caused by past drug or alcohol use will be approved, so make sure you stop using before submitting your claim.

If your disability will last for less than one year, it is more than likely your claim for benefits will be denied by the SSA. In order to receive benefits from the SSA, your disability must last for more than one year or must be a terminal illness.

Did you fail to follow the orders issued by your doctor? If so, this will severely hurt your claim for benefits. If the doctor prescribes you medication, therapy or bed rest you need to follow these orders until told otherwise.

You will be required to submit medical records when filing for benefits. If you fail to provide these records, your claim will be denied.

Being notified that your disability claim has been denied can be frightening. You might not know where your next check will come from or if you will be able to pay the bills. Make sure you know how to properly submit a claim that will be accepted.
