Important mistakes to avoid when filing your SSD claims

On Behalf of | Feb 22, 2022 | Social Security Disability |

The process of filing a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD) benefits can be confusing, to say the least. While the SSD exists to help individuals who are no longer able to work thanks to their illness or disability, making certain mistakes during the application process can hurt your claim even when you qualify for the benefits. You need to ensure that the paperwork is accurate and that your application is submitted within the stipulated timeframe.

Most SSD applications are denied thanks to the complex claims process and errors during the evaluation process. That said, you can reduce your chances of an SSD denial by avoiding these common mistakes during the application process:

Providing incomplete or inaccurate medical records

You will be required to furnish SSA with a comprehensive account of your medical history so that they can verify your condition and make sure you qualify for benefits. Some of the information you will need to provide include:

  • The identity and contact information of the doctors, hospitals and caseworkers who have treated you
  • The dates of your hospital admissions and the reasons you were hospitalized
  • The name and dosage of medications you take for your conditions

Additionally, you will need to submit a separate document detailing your medical condition and how it has impacted your ability to work. The more complete your application, the easier you may be approved.

Disregarding your doctor’s instructions

Your SSD claim may be denied if you fail to follow your doctor’s treatment plan. This may include failure to attend doctor appointments, refusing to take prescribed medications or ignoring the recommended therapy or rehabilitation routine.

Similarly, SSA may require additional medical information before making a decision on your case. To this end, they may direct you to undergo a specific medical evaluation. Failure to honor this directive can result in your claim’s denial.

There is no doubt that the SSD claims process can be quite complex. However, understanding and avoiding the common pitfalls that can result in your claim’s denial is key to ensuring that you get the financial benefits you need.
