People receive Social Security Disability for a variety of conditions, and these benefits are often considered to be temporary. The Social Security Administration may perform a continuing disability review (sometimes referred to as a CDR). The two ways that a person may lose their Social Security Disability benefits include:

  • The person returns to work and earns a monthly amount equal to or greater than Substantial Gainful Activity (“SGA”).
  • The person’s health improves enough that they are no longer prevented from working and earning an income.

If SSA performs a CDR, it is important to advise them of all of the healthcare providers that the disabled individual has treated with SSA may make an informed decision with all of the medical evidence. Many times disabled individuals have benefits cut off when SSA determines they have had medical improvement because SSA did not have all of the relevant medical records.
