4 mistakes to avoid when applying for Social Security benefits

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2023 | Social Security Disability |

You may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits if a physical or mental condition prevents you from working. However, you must get through the application process to have your disability benefits approved.

One needs to be careful when applying for these benefits since not every application gets approved. Your application may be unsuccessful due to errors in the paperwork or a lack of sufficient medical evidence. Fortunately, some of these mistakes are avoidable, as discussed below.

1. Providing incomplete or inaccurate information

Part of the application process involves submitting information related to your claim for disability benefits. You should ensure that you accurately provide everything as requested by the Social Security Administration. If your application has missing or false information, the SSA may deny your benefits.

2. Missing crucial deadlines

There are specific timelines that are crucial to your application for disability benefits. For instance, you have 60 days to file an appeal once your claim is denied. Failure to adhere to this and other deadlines could see your application denied.

3. Failing to adhere to your doctor’s prescribed treatment

The SSA will evaluate the credibility of your application by checking whether you are doing all you can to improve. This includes adhering to the prescribed medication or treatment course recommended by your doctor. Therefore, you need to follow your treating doctor’s instructions and, if possible, get the necessary documentation in support.

4. Going it alone

The application process can be overwhelming, especially if you do not know what to expect. As such, it is in your best interests to have qualified legal counsel to help with your application. It will be easier to avoid common pitfalls that could hurt your chances with the proper guidance and understanding of how everything works.
