Could you be under investigation for Social Security fraud?

On Behalf of | Feb 14, 2024 | Social Security Disability |

When you apply for Social Security Disability benefits, you open yourself up to investigations by the Social Security Administration (SSA). While the SSA does not investigate everyone who applies for benefits, this happens more frequently than many applicants realize.

Investigations often originate from the local workers at the SSA office where people apply. They may sense that applicants are not being honest about their physical or mental conditions and initiate a deeper dive into your lifestyle and alleged limitations.

People in your life can report you

When you apply for disability benefits, you might mention that to others in your life. That’s understandable — and also unnecessary. There is no reason why you need to share this personal information with others (with the possible exception of a spouse). If you reveal to a friend or relative that you applied for disability benefits and the two of you get into an argument, they could report you for fraud.

The SSA can open a fraud investigation on you

Once you have been reported for suspected fraud, one or more investigators can follow and photograph you. They can use a ruse to get you to talk to them while they assess your physical or mental condition even though they have no medical training. They can speak to your neighbors, friends, family and former employers or co-workers.

What can you do?

You might not be aware of the investigation, so you should be mindful of how your actions and interactions can appear to others. Maybe you picked up your grandchild and put them onto your shoulders. If the investigator snapped that shot, they don’t know that little gesture cost you two days in bed lying on a heating pad. All they know is that you were able to hoist 40 lbs. above your head.

Learning more about your rights and responsibilities when applying for Social Security Disability benefits is always a wise move.
