How soon after workplace accidents can workers apply for SSDI?

On Behalf of | Sep 23, 2025 | Social Security Disability |

When a serious workplace injury happens, the impact goes beyond physical pain. Workers may face long recovery times, unplanned income loss and being in the dark about their future.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides financial resources for workers who are not in a position to work due to a disability. Knowing when to apply is critical, helping to ensure that injured employees receive timely benefits without unnecessary delays.

Timing your application after an accident

Workers can apply for SSDI as soon as it is clear that their injury will prevent them from earning a living for at least 12 months. There is no mandatory waiting period to file, but benefits will only start after a five-month waiting period from the date the disability began. Applying early helps to ensure fresh medical documentation and employment records, which can strengthen the case. If there is uncertainty about the long-term severity of the injury, a worker might consult a doctor before filing to confirm that the disability meets Social Security’s strict definition.

Coordinating with workers’ compensation

Many injured employees also receive workers’ compensation benefits from their employer’s insurance. These benefits cover medical costs and part of lost wages. Applying for SSDI while receiving workers’ compensation is common, but the combined payments cannot exceed a certain percentage of the worker’s previous income.

This offset can lower the SSDI amount, but does not affect eligibility. Filing for SSDI promptly while still on workers’ compensation can help ensure a smooth transition if benefits overlap or if workers’ compensation ends first.

Workers injured on the job do not have to wait until all other benefits run out before seeking SSDI. The key is medical certainty that the injury will keep them from working for at least a year. Applying as soon as that is clear, while following reliable legal insight and coordinating with any workers’ compensation, can speed up the process.
